Tornado Shelters in Pampa, TX

Pampa has many older homes, often with detached garages or raised wood floors. Here is how shelter choices work for those houses.

Pampa is the Gray County seat, about 55 miles northeast of Amarillo on US-60. Much of the town was built during the oil and gas years of the early and mid 1900s, so many houses are older, with detached garages, smaller lots, and wood floors on pier-and-beam foundations rather than a slab. Those details narrow the shelter options, but don't rule any out.

If your home has a pier-and-beam floor

Above-ground safe rooms must be anchored to concrete that can resist a tornado's uplift and sliding forces. A raised wood floor can't provide that, so an indoor safe room in a pier-and-beam home usually isn't practical without pouring a new foundation. The usual options are:

  • an above-ground safe room in the garage, if the garage slab qualifies or a new pad is poured,
  • a garage floor shelter set into the garage slab,
  • an in-ground shelter in the yard, close to the back door.

Detached garages

A garage floor shelter in a detached garage still means a dash across the yard. If the garage is only a few steps from the back door, that may be acceptable for your household. If it's at the back of a long lot, an in-ground shelter near the house may be quicker to reach. Time the walk at night, with a flashlight, before you decide.

Checking an older slab

Older garage slabs can be thin, cracked or without reinforcement. Before recommending an above-ground room, an installer should check the slab's thickness and condition against the manufacturer's anchoring requirements, which follow FEMA P-361 criteria. If it doesn't qualify, a new reinforced pad is the fix, and that should be priced in the quote, not added later.

Smaller lots

Narrow older lots can make it hard to get excavation equipment into a backyard. Ask how the installer will access the site, whether a fence section needs to come down, and how they'll protect your lawn and driveway.

After the install

Keep the door area clear, check the latches and hinges each spring, and keep a small kit inside: water, flashlight, weather radio and any medications. Register the shelter with local emergency management if a registry is available.

Common questions

Can I put a safe room inside a pier-and-beam house?

Usually not without a new concrete foundation, because safe rooms need to be anchored to concrete that resists uplift. The garage or yard is the usual location.

Is my old garage slab strong enough?

It depends on thickness, reinforcement and condition. The installer should check it against the manufacturer's anchoring requirements and quote a new pad if needed.

What should I keep inside the shelter?

Water, a flashlight, a battery or hand-crank weather radio, a basic first aid kit, and any essential medications. Keep it small so it does not take up space people need.
